The Starfish Malaria Project
In Africa today, a child dies of malaria every thirty seconds. We know that we cannot solve the problem of malaria single-handed. None of us can. But we can make a difference to a small number of people, just as in the Starfish Story. See the latest information, 2009 Starfish Project Update. We are working with the people living in a small fishing village which is in The Gambia, West Africa, and surrounding villages. We work through a Gambian agency that is overseeing the Starfish Malaria Project on a day-to-day basis with us. ![]() One of the simplest ways of preventing malaria is to provide mosquito nets which have been treated with a special insecticide. We will use the money that we receive to buy treated mosquito nets which will be distributed to people most at risk of malaria – young children and pregnant women. Some of the money will also be used to employ two Gambian workers who will dip the nets, distribute them and educate the families on how to use them properly.
£4 will buy a treated net. As several children usually share each bed, on average this would protect three children from malaria. The money is taken directly to The Gambia and handed to the head of the agency we are working with. A close check is kept on expenditure to ensure that none of the money is wasted. Please support this project, and you too will be able to MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
